"WHEN NOTHING IS SURE
EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE..."

"The death of one of the history's most  notorious evil doer                                                                  remains a mystery today"

Elisha  Graves Otis was a noteworthy American inventor , who invented passenger elevator with safety device. He was born on 3rd August ,1811 at Halifax ,  vermont , United states. His parents were Stephen otis  and Phoebe Glynn. Being born to farmer's family, he was interested in dealing with machines and carpentry. He had a  common   educational qualification. At the age of 19, he attented the public schools at Halifax. At the age of  23, he married Susan A Haughton and had two sons. Later, Susan died leaving his two sons Charles Rollin Ottis and Norton Prentice Otis with Elisha Otis. After the death of Susan, Otis married  Elizabeth A Boyd in 1845. Otis had a great passion for innovating labour saving machines.

ROLE IN CAREER:

Elisha Otis migrated to Troy from Halifax at the age of 20 and worked as a wagon driver and carpenter. Later , he couldn't able to carry forward his work due to his  health issues.  So he moved to Brattleboro. From 1838 to 1845,Otis lived in Brattleboro ,Vermont hills and constructed grist mill and saw mill of his own. Unfortunately his attempt was not successful and so he returned to carpentry and started building wagons and carriages. Later , he moved to Albany, New York in 1845 and worked as master mechanic in bedstead company. In 1851 , he moved to Bergen , New York and again worked as a mechanic in bedstead factory. Bergen Firm sent Otis to Yonkers , New York in 1852 and hired him a work to convert an abandoned sawmill into bedstead factory and to install its machinery equipments.
So , Elisha Otis accepted this challenge and used this opportunity to innovate an entire industry and made Hoists , Elevators and Safers. Then , he resigned his job and kept a elevator shop in Yonkers , New York . He started selling his first elevator machine in September 20 , 1853.

SAFETY FEARS:

In 1854 , ELISHA OTIS , made a practical examination by riding the platform high in the air . He stood on a Platform and made his helper stood next to him with an axe and ordered to cut the rope . The crowd gasped..........

"ALL SAFE , GENTLEMAN , ALL SAFE"...........Boomed Otis

The demonstration  was made at Crystal Palace , New York . In 1857 , March 23 , he invented the first safety elevator passenger service in the store of  E.V. HAUGHWOUT and CO  in New York.

                                                                                                               E.V.Haughwout&co

                                       " BE  FEARLESSLY  AUTHENTIC"

SAFETY HOIST:

Initially , Elevators was used to carry Freights only but Otis made the first passenger elevator possible . The "Safety Hoist "  installed by him was an automatic safety device that prevents the falling of passengers if the lifting chain or rope broke. In 1867 , the  french engineer Leon Edaux continued to develop an steam powered hydraulic elevators. This plays a role in industrial revolution.

CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING:

The safety device has 2-3 types of woven steel cables. The steel cables were referred as Ropes by Technicians in which the number of ropes depend on the factors of safety. The director of the Otis Elevator  ,  Daryl Marvin said that ,

"...Before each run , Elevator system , checks the ' Safety Chain'..."

The elevator consist of 2-3 types of breaks. AC Slip Rings or DC Compound motors are preferred for elevators. The safety device consisted of a used Wagon Spring  was attached to both the Hoist platform and Overhead lifting cable. Otis added Metal Prongs to the exterior of the elevator and a Wagon Spring to the Pulley that will enable the platform to be sustained. The underside of the car ( elevator) is always attached with Safety device. If any error occurs in safety device , the pulley above the Car (elevator) is closed by the Clamp. When brake is applied , the friction is developed between the wedge and rail which makes the car to stop at comfortable rate. The safety devices used in today's modern world is similar to the one used in 100 years ago.

USAGE:

⭐ Following the Presentation , it was installed in t 488 Broadway in New York in 1857.

⭐Otis Brothers ( known today as Otis Elevator Company) initiated the 1st public Lift in Five-Storey New York Department store in 1874.

BENEFITS:
💖  The  Safety locking mechanism has worked and people gained greater willingness to ride in TRACTION ELEVATORS.

💖 It quickly became User-friendly and helped Present day SKYCRAPERS possible.

💖 After the great reach and World's fair , Otis received continuous orders , doubling each year.

CURRENT AVAILABILITY:

Elisha Otis , is the name of the world's largest elevator CO and Corporation. The Otis Elevator Company was acquired by United Technologies in 1976

Other inventions of Otis:

  •          Bread baking oven and Train brakes -  1857

  •               Rotary oven                                           -   1858

  •               Oscillating stream engine                  -  1860

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started"

CULMINATION:

Elisha Otis demised in 8 APRIL , 1861 at the age of 49 due to Diphtheria. On January 15, 1861 ,  he patented an independent controlled Steam engine for elevator use. After Elisha Otis death ,  his sons, carved the firm and developed it successfully . In 1853 , he founded Union elevator works and later called Otis Brothers and Company.

The safety device that Elisha Otis constructed is the basics for all future designs. The Technological Advancement in today's world is also inspired by his stupendous work .

'The greatest glory in living lies not in never    falling but in rising every time we fall......'
