 PRELIM :

           Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16 , 1889 at London , England. His father was Sr.Charles Chaplin , music hall entertainer and mother was Hannah Chaplin , music hall singer. His siblings are Sydney Chaplin and Wheeler Dryden. His father and his mother became mentally sick , then she confined to asylum , later found to be suffering from syphilis . His family undergone poverty and he could barely earn any education. Chaplin and his brother, Sydney was sent to the London District school for Pauperse . Meanwhile , they worked in restaurant and residential schools. At the age of five, Chaplin performed his first stage show to  replace his mother who lost his voice in the middle of the song . Chaplin imitated his mother's cracked voice. He faced extremely harsh situations in initial and those pushed him to search happiness even in uphill situations. The emotions he portrayed on the screen to bring a smile on millions of faces were actually an illusion.

Chaplin's Biggest Breaks: 

          He grew as an actor - comedian and expanded his horizons even as a film director , film producer and musician of America . Comedy was never given the status of a "Category" Under acting .

At the age of eight , in 1897 Chaplin joined in an eight Lancashire Lads and became a professional entertainer , a clog dancer. Chaplin's First biggest break was happened when he playes a pageboy in a production of Sherlock Holmes by Charles Frohman . By his stunning performance , he was assigned  to play as the pageboy again , but this time in the show starring William Gillete , who is the most popular Sherlock Holmes production in 1906 . His Second biggest break was happened in 1908 by Fred Karno Pentamine troupe , one of its star as drunk comedian sketch , ' A night in an England music hall' . It was a character that will stick with him for many years but would soon be refined and reworked as the The Tramp character . It was in 1913 that Chaplin was first seen on the screen for the film , one reeler, make a living. Because of his stellar performance , he was noticed by Mack Sennett , a film producer for keystone studio . He made this debut film for Keystone studio by signing a contract for $ 150 per week . He created a remarkable identity and became a legendary actor who redefined the art in his prolific performances.

Keystone to Essanay:

             During his tenure at Keystone Studios , he had starred in more than 30 films . His first appearance as an actor was a short film titled Make a Living' in 1914 , but it was not until the movie Kid Auto at Venice released in the same year. 
    It was also in Keystone studios that he met Mabel Normand , an actor and director who taught him many things about being a film artist and a Director . However , Mack Sennett gave him a chance to direct his own movies and the producer's direction would eventually become fruit fall as Chaplin's films were very successful .

      Steppin' into Essanay :

His first full length film appearance was in the 1914 film Tillie's Punctures Romance , which was distracted by Mack Sennett . The film was directed by Mack Sennett . The film was 74 Mins long but the 2003 restored version was 82 Mins after adding scrapped scans into the movie . He wanted his salary  to be $1,000 per weak , but Sennett refused to pay and so he left the studio . Then, he joined Essanay company  in 1915 which offered $ 1250 a week and his brother joined him and started working as manager. He almost done 14 films under Essanay ,with one being the Tramp in 1915. Also , in most of these 14 movies , he was partnered with Edna Purviance as his leading lady .Later he moved to mutual funds company at the age of 26. Mutual funds company paid $670,000 per week.

 Talkies &  Cognates : 

The Little Tramp, a classic was a big hit at that time which created steer and made the audience go wild about Chaplin . By 1918 Chaplin became a best known figure in the world. At 26, he had become a trend assuring the box office hit . He  produced maximum hits like " The Kid " , "The Pilgrim ", " The Gold Rush " And " Women in Paris " . He also produced silent films in 1930 namely "city lights" , "modern times ". In 1940 , he made his first sound film , 'The great dictator' which says the life story of Hitler. WEDLOCKS :


     After a successful career , he got married to 16 year old actor Mildred Harris . Unfortunately , she could not hold the position of Chaplin's ladylove for long . They lived together for 2 years and soon got separated . In 1924 , he again got married to 16 year old actor Lita Grey, who acted in his movie Gold Rush . This gave him two sons : Charles Junior and  Sydney . But soon , he got separated in 1927 . In 1936 , he married for the third time with Paulette Goddard, chorus girl . It lasted till 1942 . Then he married Joan Barry but this also ended in breakup. In 1943 , again made a new try and fortunately , he succeeded . He married a 18 year old Onna O'Neil, daughter of Eugene O'Neil . They together had 8 children and lived happily  .

Downturn & Death:


    After second world war broke , there were movements held against communists in America . He also joined the movement and went for a holiday in Britain . He was stopped and could not return back . He started living at Wavy in Switzerland . In 1972 , he visited America to accept the Academy Award for his acting and legendary work . 
 He died on the morning of December 25th , 1977 . His work is still remembered and watched over and over again . He was one of his own kinds and there could be no other Charlie Chaplin on this universe again . This makes him venerable . He could mesmerize the audience with his acts . His actions could help people laugh and this made him different from other artists of the contemporary.

  The statue of Charlie Chaplin in Leicester Square , London , is a work of 1979 by the Sculptor John Doubleday . It portrays the actor , comedian and filmaker in his best known role , as The  Tramp
     
  The Bronze statue was first unveiled on 16th April 1981 on the South - western comes of the square by the author Sir Ralph Richardson. Following a refurbishment of Leicestor Square in 1989 - 1992 , the statue was moved to a site the square's centrepiece . In a later refurbishment of 2010 - 2012 Chaplin's statue was removed altogether , together with busts of William Hogarth , John Hunter , Sir Issac Newton and Sir Joshua Reynolds . In 2016 , it returned to Leicester Square and was re-unveiled on Chaplin's Birthday .
